A Church on Fire

This is a church on fire, this is the Holy Spirit flame
We have a burning desire to lift up Jesus’ name
Let the fire burn in every heart to light the way, defeat the dark
Let the flame of love burn higher
This is a church, this is a church on fire

The lyrics of this song from Hillsong Worship seem to sum up the burning within me today.  It is a burning with passion for God’s church.  It is a burning of appreciation for the people of Hood Memorial Christian Church.  It is a burning of humbleness as I remember the journey that has brought my family here and the wonderful people who were a part of that journey.  It is a burning of love as I recognize the healing that is taking place inside.  It is a burning because the church is on fire—Hood Memorial Christian Church is on fire!

What a way to celebrate Pentecost this past Sunday!  What a celebration as we heard the choir lift up I Surrender All; as we sang together A Mighty Fortress is our God, as we heard scripture read by former pastors, as we were challenged to be a Pentecost Church, as we were charged to Love One Another, as we gathered at Christ’s table, as we were led in worship by our children, as we symbolized our one-ness, as we feasted together. God’s loved poured out through each act of worship and each heart that was present (in body and spirit).

During a time of major transition for our family and for the congregation of Hood Memorial, we have provided healing for one another.  The trust that this church family has given us, the love you have shown to us, and the many ways you have reached out to us and walked with us–has been a ministry of healing.  We are grateful for this  family.

We have also wholeheartedly joined Hood Memorial on the journey of service to the community of Dunn. We have faith in your vision, we have commitment to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and we have the desire to continue to shine God’s light in the midst of darkness together.  We are a church on fire.  Praise be to God.
