Lift Your Eyes

I encourage you to listen to this beautiful piece by Mendlessohn as you keep reading:  Lift Thine Eyes.

Psalm 121 is one of my favorite scriptures.  It has personal meaning to me, having grown up in the Roanoke Valley of Virginia and being surrounded by glorious mountains.  Each year, on my parents’ anniversary, we took a special trip to the Peaks of Otter and spent the evening there enjoying nature.  In college, I learned the art of climbing mountains, and learned to appreciate them even more.  When I moved to Richmond for seminary, I always anticipated the trips home.  I knew I was getting close when I could see the mountain ranges in the distance.

What I appreciate about growing up in the valley, surrounded by mountains, is that it caused me to always look up.  When you get ready to climb a mountain…you start by looking up.  In the valleys, we are always looking up to the grandeur around us!!  Even when the surroundings aren’t half bad, looking up is so much greater!

The writer of Psalm 121, knew something about this.  The writer starts “Lift thine eyes to the mountains…”  When we lift our eyes, when we can see past our current climb, we know that God is there working tirelessly for us.  God is our guide, our guardian, and our champion.  Lift your eyes and know that God is there!
