Mothers and the Church, part 3

Today we share a story of another beloved mother at Hood Memorial. We can learn from the stories of mothers along our faith journey. These are women and mothers in our church family who helped shape the faith of their own children or others around them.

As a part of our 130th year of ministry in Dunn, we have collected stories and memories of women whose legacy and influence of faith continues through the ministry and work of our church family.  We wanted to share these stories with our church family in our gratitude for all they contributed to strengthen our faith in God.

Today’s reflections are from Joanne Godwin, daughter of Lois Godwin.

My mother, Lois Godwin, was raised in the church-attending the Gospel Tabernacle most of her young adult life.  After she met and married Herman Godwin they became acquainted with Dr. F. W. Wiegmann, pastor at Hood Memorial.  Soon, probably in 1943, they became members at Hood.

From then on, mama took an active role in all phases of church life.  She worked faithfully with the children’s programs-teaching Sunday School, Bible School, helping in the nursery, etc.

Mama loved teaching the Bible.  She taught the McD Holiday Class for adult women for 20 plus years.  She would spend hours preparing her lessons.  She also enjoyed visiting the sick and those unable to attend church regularly.

In 1982, while Rev. Frank Leggett was pastor at Hood Memorial, she was named Layperson of the Year.

Mama’s love for Jesus Christ and the church was a lifetime commitment.  At age 100, she took part in the Christmas Advent program.  She recited the Christmas story from Luke.  Her memory was still “sharp”.

Her faith journey touched many lives!  We were truly blessed to have such a wonderful, Christian mother.

She lived to be 102!!

Reflection:

  • Ms. Lois loved Jesus and shared that love by teaching children and teaching the Bible to women.  Think about the ways that you share Jesus’ love to those around you.
  • What type of influence and impact are you having on those around you?
  • What are some of the Bible stories that have influenced your faith journey?  How did you first learn of these stories?
  • Thank God for the teachers in your life.  Thank God for the people in your life that shared stories from the Bible with you.  Thank God for placing people in your life that direct you to God’s love.
