Foundations of Fathers

This Sunday we celebrate Father’s Day.  In our worship we will celebrate all the men in our church for the ways they are committed to our God and teach us through their example.  We recognize and pray for all fathers and men:

  • new fathers
  • fathers who have lost a child
  • fathers who never had children of their own, but lived as an example
  • men who served as teachers and mentors
  • men who struggle on their journey and still remain faithful
  • men who offer questions and thoughts that remind us all to lean on God
  • fathers and men of influence in our lives that are no longer with us

During this 130th anniversary year, we want to remember some of our “forefathers” of Hood Memorial Christian Church.  We celebrate and give thanks for the lives of people who sacrificed and gave their hearts in service of Jesus Christ at Hood Memorial.  And we want to share a few of those stories with you throughout the week.

Today we here from Martha Ann “Mott” Goff about L. A. Tart.

L. A. Tart (“Big Daddy” was my name for him) came to Dunn in 1908 from Sampson County.  He and his wife, Minnie, joined Hood Memorial Christian Church in that year.  Their five children and their children joined him in his love for the church:  Mary Elizabeth Fowler, Bozie Tart, Lee Tart, Martha Ann Goff, and Robie Butler continue his legacy.

He was described as “a man of the people” and said of himself that he loved people.  His life was spent in community service: farming, construction, lumber, and banking.

Grandmother (Mott Tart) said when the door of the church were open, he was there.  His devotion to the Christian Church extended to his service to Atlantic Christian College, serving as a Trustee for many years.

I was happy to grow up next door.  When his car was started on Sunday morning, I jumped in for the ride to church!
