God, Our Mother

Mother’s Day can be both a great day…and a difficult day. The church has too often only celebrated and honored the prototypical mother: a female with living, biological children. Last year at Hood, we celebrated every kind of mother: biological, foster, adoptive, pregnant, deceased, soon-to-be, step-mothers, mentor mothers, mothers who have had miscarriages…you get the idea. And we will do that again this year. (In fact, don’t forget to bring a picture of one or more mother figures in your life to church this Sunday – we will use the pictures in......

Hearing God's Voice

We are called to study and read scripture for ourselves. Rather than having tests of faith and creedal statements, we critically and thoughtfully study scripture, taking into account the history and background – the context – in which it was written. This statement is part of the identity of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the group of churches with which our church is in a covenant relationship (sometimes called a denomination). In fact, most protestant churches were founded on similar statements believing that every person has the right and the ability to read, study......

I'm Just a Child

When I was the age my girls are now, I went to church choir practice every week after school.  Surely, church choir is where my love of music began.  We learned music theory, we played different musical instruments, we played musical games, went on musical scavenger hunts, sang about freckles and invisible dogs and we learned to be worship leaders.  We worked hard to perfect the art of standing still on the risers and opening our mouths (3 fingertips wide) at precisely the right time. I remember lots of the songs I learned......

Stop Hunger Now

“You are what you eat,” as the saying goes. While we tend to use this phrase to consider healthy food choices, this saying has a more alarming implication: If someone has nothing to eat, does that mean that person is nothing? For someone who does not have access to daily meals, who cannot afford enough food, who does not have healthy food options within reach, the saying “you are what you eat” is demoralizing, disempowering and downright frightening. And I think those of us who do have plenty to eat should consider our......

Let the little children come...

Psalm 122 proclaims, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘let us go into the house of the Lord.'”  The children at our church share so much joy and truly love coming to “the house of the Lord”.  It is wonderful that the number of children is growing!  It is our responsibility to love, teach, and help our children grow.  It is you, the people of the church, that makes Hood Memorial such a special place for the children to be. One way to live out our new mission to offer love to all is......

Our mission is to… serve Christ through mutually supporting one another & embodying God’s grace and love for all We envision… a diverse church led by Christ to open its doors in love and service to all This coming Sunday, we will have a church-wide conference meeting directly after worship to vote on several items. Our Mission is to… serve Christ......

Welcome Pretzel Logistics!

On Sunday, our Church Board officially approved to begin using the Third Floor of the LA Tart Education Building for non-profits and small ministry-mission based organizations and businesses that serve the community.  Our first official “tenant” is Pretzel Logistics Yoga, owned and operated by Grace Church.  Grace will offer yoga classes throughout the week to folks all across our community. I firmly believe that our relationship with people like Grace and organizations like Pretzel Logistics is vital to ministry in this day and age. Yoga classes on the campus of Hood Memorial......

Our Mission & Vision

In November, the Church Board tasked a Mission-Vision Team to develop mission and vision statements for Hood Memorial Christian Church. These mission and vision statements are to be grounded in God’s call for our church through our collective voices. And they will serve as guides for decision making in the years ahead as they state our hopes, dreams and goals. Mission and vision affect every aspect of our work together as church family. They will require us to revisit our bylaws and church structure to ensure that we are being a mission......
