As For Me...

We serve God by serving others. Sounds simple, but in practice it’s more complicated. Just ask Joshua. Joshua understood the difficulty of serving God. And at the end of then book which bears his name in the Hebrew Bible, Joshua tries to explain the difficulty to the people of Israel. The story goes like this: Joshua: You should serve God, but if you can’t don’t make the commitment. Ok, now choose…who will you serve? As for my family , we will serve God. People: We will serve God! Joshua: No, you won’t.......

We'll Fly Away

Have you ever heard these phrases: “Jesus lives in your heart.”  “Invite Jesus to be your personal Lord and Savior.”  “It’s all about your personal relationship with God.”  “It’s between you and God.” What about these songs? Jesus loves me, this I know. I’ll fly away. I know whom I have believed. My Jesus, I love Thee. I love you, Lord, and I lift my voice. These are phrases that I have heard and songs that I have sung over and over again in the church.  These phrases taught me that my......

Somehow, Someway

If you stopped by or called the church office this week, then you have probably noticed neither I nor Joanie have been there much. We apologize. It has been a week of the unanticipated. The stomach flu has run its course through our entire family. Joanie has been the latest victim (we are praying that she is well by Friday morning). This bug has completely thrown our schedule out of whack as we have had to care for the children and one another. We’ve both spent time working from home with sick......

God, Our Mother

Mother’s Day can be both a great day…and a difficult day. The church has too often only celebrated and honored the prototypical mother: a female with living, biological children. Last year at Hood, we celebrated every kind of mother: biological, foster, adoptive, pregnant, deceased, soon-to-be, step-mothers, mentor mothers, mothers who have had miscarriages…you get the idea. And we will do that again this year. (In fact, don’t forget to bring a picture of one or more mother figures in your life to church this Sunday – we will use the pictures in......

Hearing God's Voice

We are called to study and read scripture for ourselves. Rather than having tests of faith and creedal statements, we critically and thoughtfully study scripture, taking into account the history and background – the context – in which it was written. This statement is part of the identity of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the group of churches with which our church is in a covenant relationship (sometimes called a denomination). In fact, most protestant churches were founded on similar statements believing that every person has the right and the ability to read, study......

Deep Consciousness of God

What rests deep within your consciousness throughout the day? Worries? Hopes? Fears? Successes? Failures? Your “To Do” list? What if each day were filled with a deep consciousness of God? What would that look and feel like? What would it take for that to happen in your life? Maybe you are already there. But if you are like me, I am always trying to deepen my mind and heart with a sense of God’s presence. One passage I have focused on this week comes from 1 Peter 1:17-23. Here’s a few verses that......
