I Am…
The gospel of John is full of “I am” statements. Jesus’ use of metaphors and vivid imagery helps his followers find a way to connect to him. If you are hungry–you might connect to Jesus being the bread of life. If you are lost, you might connect to Jesus being the way. If you are a farmer, you might connect to Jesus being a shepherd or a vine. Here are a few examples in the first 15 chapters of John (a few we have visited during sermons on Sunday morning).
I am he–John 4:26
I am the bread of life–John 6:35
I am the light of the world–John 8:12
I am the gate–John 10:9
I am the good shepherd–John 10:14
I am the resurrection and the life–John 11:25
I am the way, the truth, and the life–John 14:6
I am the true vine–John 15:1
These “I am” statements help connect the human and the Divine. These statements still provide us with a way to relate to God through the life of Jesus.
Which one(s) of these statements do you connect with the most? What do you learn about God through this “I Am” statement? What do you learn about yourself?
Which one of the “I Am” statements from John do you stay away from? Why? What keeps you connecting with God through this image?
Finish this statement: “I am __________________.”
How would you finish the statement about yourself? How does the way you finish this statement describe your relationship with God? I am…
