Our God is Great

Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty, wrapped in light as with a garment.
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.

Psalm 104: 1-2, 33-34

On Sunday, John Johnson shared a story about Alexander the Great. On one particular conquest, Alexander was leading his warriors into the land. As they entered, Alexander and his men were welcomed by the high priest. This act of welcome caused Alexander to bow on his knee and honor the God of the land. Later, Alexander asked the people of the land what he could do for them. He allowed them to keep their laws and customs.

Our ministry intern, Ryan Craddock summed up this story by saying “The surprise of compassion can cause a surprise reaction.” In John’s story, the surprising compassion of the high priest to offer welcome to Alexander and his army that were coming to conquer them caused the surprising reaction of Alexander honoring God.

What can you do this week that can help turn someone’s eyes on God? How do we need to love our enemies? How might God be honored through our acts of compassion?
