That They May See…

You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:13-16

On Wednesdays at 12 noon, we are walking through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. This week we look at Matthew 5:13-16. Jesus proclaims two amazing compliments over his audience: You are the salt of the earth… You light of the world…!

Jesus also places upon them (and us!) a great calling: Let your light shine!

I invite you to reflect on this passage and come on Wednesday (in-person or on our conference call line) with your reflections, questions, and thoughts about this wonderful passage. To get you thinking a bit more, check out some great thoughts from Clarence Jordan (founder of Koinonia Farms) in his book Sermon on the Mount:

“That others might see your lovely ways…” Why did [Jesus] tack an uncomfortable thing like that on to a nice compliment like “Ye are the light of the world?” How nice it would have been if he had said, “That others might see your beautiful new sanctuary,” or “hear your choir,” or “see your financial report,” or “read a copy of those strong resolutions you adopted.” Yet he didn’t say it that way. And with his simple words he placed the church under an eternal obligation to live its message, cost what it may.

“Of course, the church must also preach the Word, but at the same time realize that the power of the spoken word lies in the demonstration of it.”

Clarence Jordan, Sermon on the Mount
