The Lord’s Prayer – Part 4

Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Matthew 6:12

This week we watch the fourth video in the Lord‘s prayer series. Adam Hamilton speaks about the Greek word for sin which literally means “to miss the mark” or stray from the path. We all will miss the mark or story from the path many times. But there is a way back! By seeking forgiveness and letting go of our personal sin, we may be drawn back to the path towards God.

Hamilton also speaks to our need to forgive others. We carry a heavy load that can literally weigh us down when we let the wrong doings of others consume us. To forgive is to let go, to lighten our load. Jesus is clear that our prayer should be for God to forgive us JUST AS we forgive others. It is not a suggestion to forgive others…it is an expectation.

Check out the video and take time to reflect:

  • When have you “missed the mark”? How did you find your way back to the target, to God’s path for you?
  • Think of a time when others have wronged you. What did it take to let go of the idea of holding that sin over their head?
  • What do you think of when you pray “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
  • What does it mean that we pray this together, who plural pronouns: us and our?
