Obey and Rest
Today’s readings: Hebrews 4:1-5,11 ; Psalm 78:1-4 ; Mark 2:1-12
I’ll admit that I had to read today’s passage from Hebrews three or four times before I could put the puzzle pieces together. God promised rest. Then God swore that we wouldn’t enter His rest? Yet, we can enter his rest. It was a bit confusing. And to be honest, I really want the promise of rest to be true. Between a calendar that is quickly filling up and a new dog that doesn’t sleep on my schedule…I long for rest.
It helped to read a few more of the surrounding verses. Verse 6 continues “Since therefore it remains open for some to enter it and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience”. This verse helped me to understand that God’s rest is open and meant for all. The problem comes in our human-ness. The problem is our disobedience of God. We get in the way of our own rest. We create more things to do and forget God’s command to rest…to join God.
So, it seems that our rest, our ability to join in God’s rest, is related to our obedience to God. And more specifically: are we listening to God? When God calls us are we following? When God speaks do we listen? When God says rest, do we choose to rest? Lord, help us to listen, follow, obey your Word to us each day!
